Chennai vs Bangalore

This post is dedicated to good friend Muski’s memory. Recently he had to undergo an inhuman job transfer from Bangalore back to Chennai. He has been incommunicado since and none of his well-wishers are aware of how or whether he has coped up with the drastic change.

I am getting tired of shooting people in the face whenever they ask me which city is better for people like us with lives- Chennai or Bangalore. Getting rid of bodies is no longer as easy as it used to be. So I have listed a few irrefutable reasons below. The whole thing may look more like a diatribe against Chennai than anything for Bangalore. But let’s dispense with the standard forms of debate and comparison in this one instance.

The weather: Bangalore has one. Chennai doesn’t.

The autowallahs: Anybody who has lived in Chennai long enough often fantasize about raiding the auto wallah’s village on horseback in the middle of the night and razing it to the ground. Let me declare unequivocally that the auto-drivers of Bangalore are no saints but at least they won’t start whining ‘twenty rupees more saar’ as soon as we are two miles within our destination.

Language issues: I am all for a parochial approach to the enforcement of the local language as long as it postponed to a future date on a regular basis (like in Bangalore). If you want to call yourself a metro, you need to speak English & Hindi as properly as Tamil. It’s not a question of pride but of pragmatism.

Buses: Either have buses which move fast like in Delhi or have more Volvos like in Bangalore so that while you are stuck in a jam, its seems a wee bit more comfortable. Being in rickety tin boxes packed like sardines while in a traffic jam. Not good.

Alcohol Policy & Pubs: While I have been told that the draconian and Tughlakish alcohol policy of Chennai which stifled most brands out of the market, has been repealed after dire legal threats from WTO and people no longer have to be exposed to the radioactive MGM (orange flavoured, mind you), it isn’t enough. Pubbing in Chennai is like sea-food restaurants in Darjeeling. Non-existent. Either I have to go to one of those Residency series of hotels where I need to take out a personal loan from SBI so as to afford a mojito or I have go to places like Black Pearl where one is advised to carry a bucket so that you have something to puke in because of the stench and filth around.

Multiplexes: The puritans will scoff at me for including this point but my elitist days are long gone. Now I am a man of the masses and will not hesitate to assert that no self-respecting city with over ten million people should have fewer multiplexes less than my home town, which incidentally can be seen only with maximum magnification in Google Earth. It’s unheard off and people should just migrate in protest.

Cinema hall commercials: Don’t we love the trailers before the movie? Usually they are better than the movie that follows. Just like the course description in Meta electives usually read better than what the course ultimately delivered. So when I realize that the lavishly mounted video was not the teaser for the next blockbuster but a surreptitiously directed effort at making me buy hyper-expensive saris or worse, diamond jewellery, I have very good reasons to get pissed.

Culture: Whatever your taste in culture may be, you can indulge in it as long as it is Carnatic music.

Shopping: Why does the dosa shop, towel shop, jewellery shop and everything else in the world shop have to be a variant of the hydra headed Sarvanna store?

Newspaper: What’s with the gravitas in the daily editorials of the Hindu? We are Indians. We don’t care much for balanced editorials, foreign news reports, incisive columns which are not about Kim Kardashian or Rakhi Sawant. ToI rocks baby. And it’s cheaper.

Weather: At the risk of sounding repetitive, I must strongly re-emphasize that Bangalore has one. Chennai doesn’t.

But there is one aspect where Chennai scores in a big way over Bangalore. Did you know that the greatest most awsomest brilliantest place on earth, IIT Madras is actually in Chennai? Surprising but true. (Don’t you love blatant pandering to your biggest readership constituency?)

If IIT had been in Bangalore, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I would still be trying to graduate.

Hilarious!!!

Totally agree with the point of "Newspapers".

However, calling Chennai autowallahs as "autowallahs" is an insult to all the other decent autowallahs elsewhere. They are nothing more than petty thieves.

I agree. But, Murugan idly and Bessy beach are not in B'lore

Newspapers: ToI sucks big time.

Language: Learn Tamil. Simple. :D

Shopping: Sarvanna store is cheap and we were poor students back then. :)

Weather: Is it just me or is Bangalore getting really hot in afternoons? Its as bad as Chennai nowadays IMHO.
We used to get the wrath of sun because we walked 2kms to departments in afternoon. Now we sit in nice air-conditioned cubicles.

@Jimmy: Good point. Krishna Cafe comes a little close to MI.

Pardon my cynicism (for I am etymologically linked to the aforementioned), but while I am not particularly a fan of Chennai (Madras, if you will), I am not very impressed by the rave reviews of Bangalore by its (possibly temporary) residents.

1. There is a difference between daring to defy political correctness, and making a hullabaloo about Deepika Padukone being seen in public with a mole on her left elbow, or Madonna's lawsuit on adopting yet another deaf transsexual epileptic child from Burkina Faso. Matter-of-fact reporting has a simple charm.
2. The Tamil-Hindi debate has been a historical flame war, so I refuse to comment on it; but I do see your point.
3. The train system in Chennai is a great but under-utilized (hence, more comfortable) and underrated means of mass transportation. The Volvo buses in Bangalore are tailor-made for the IT get-fat-quick-scheme crowd who want to feign sustainability by not using their own vehicle.
4. My lifestyle largely limits information about several points discussed, so I'm afraid I can't comment on them either.
5. "If IIT had been in Bangalore, I wouldn’t be where I am today." Classic!

I now call upon Bangalore fanboys to test my Latin vocab (see 1:27).

Try beating Bessie beach with all the malls and what nots in the world and you will never win :)

The weather: Now Bangalore doesn’t have one either. May be it HAD one.

The autowallahs: Well Chennai auto drivers charge close to meter + small amount more, but Bangalore auto drivers charge the double the rate for all short routes, after all they don’t charge ask 25 rupees more in 2 miles distance, but you cross 200meters more than ur specified point, you are charged 20 ruppees that’s it.

Language issues: With so many immigrants into Bangalore, what more can we ask for. Language is a barrier I agree.

Busses: Well Bangalore needs Volvos because it could take you an hour to reach a destination 7 km away. In Chennai you can travel a distance of 12km in 20 minutes, how does it matter which bus we are in.

In short, each city has its own way of life, and an immigrant is better off keeping quiet than talking about things that are unknown to him/her.

Lets not compare things. I can write a 1000 things bad about Bangalore so can I about Chennai.

Life is more to look the good and enjoy the same

Finally, you don’t seem someone who will pass out wherever the IIT is :P

oh...and u seem to hav really pissed off RSP. careful wat u talk abt, boy ;)

RSP said...

hehe Nikita, no i am not pissed off. not a bit :)

Lets not compare - was my point in short.

And the last line in my first comment was on a non-serious note and to maintain the order&format of the original post :)

Ducky said...

Yep, slightly wrong about the buses there (with a single S, btw). It's universally agreed that Chennai's public transport kicks most cities' asses. It is a pity though that you have to be stuck in a highly thermal-conducting metal bus in a 2PM Chennai summer.
And Chennai has A/C buses too. Lots of them. Not to mention the MRTS.

Sayan said...

People, people! Slow down!
Why so serious? I am sure such posts can be written for every city in India.

@jimmy,jigs: Bringing in Bessie beach, murugans et al wud seriously dent my arguments and hence the post's impact. If I had done detailed, academic, balanced comparison with references to government surveys would any of you read it?

@nai: I am sure your point 1 is a brutal rape but not quite getting it. But the temorary resident jab was a brilliant one. And couldn't acces the BBC video because of some copyright issue.

@shoban,baille: Its not GW. Its shobhan.

@hugga: Thanks for being the only kind soul.

@nikita: I think I have to do an anti Bangalore post just to avoid probable fatwas.

@Ducky: You are bang on abt MRTS. Very very convinient. But the number of AC buses are not enough. But then perhaps it depends on where you want to go. But buses are definitely cheaper than here in Bang. Thanks for pointing out the typo.

@RSP: Hey, the hospital called. They have fixed your funny bone and want to give it back.

On a serious note, I am with you on the fact that comparing may be pointless. Our perceptions of cities are based on our personal experiences. There are no universal truths about any of these places. So both of us can be right and wrong at the same time. But as I have said above you may have misread the intention behind the post which was just a light diatribe against Chennai so as to pull the leg of my recently transferred friend. I have stayed in Chennai for way too long for not to have fallen in love with quite a few aspects of her.

But I do take offence to your statement about 'immigrants' not complaining. I don't think any Indian can be called an immigrant anywhere inside India and my citizenship rights include the right to criticize any place and its anomalies in a manner which is acceptable.

But then, I wish your final jab about inability to pass out was true. Passing out is my biggest regret yet.

shoban said...

@Baille: Yes, you should know better when to use the G-word. Its like FOX trying to deny GW just because its colder than usual in US right now. :D

So, my apologies for that :)

And I don't contest with your points on immigrants and fundamental rights. I used immigrants mainly to refer to non-locals. I have heard Blore locals complaining about the IT people coming from elsewhere and raising the rates in Bangalore.(Mainly with a feeling like as if they are immigrants.. so used it :))

Finally, even I wish I did not pass out. :)

how do you forget the movie stars?

Gautam said...

Bangalore has lots of Bar cum Restaurants. In Chennai there are Bar kum (read in hindi) restaurants :)

I got a chance to live in both cities and here are my two cents:
Bangalore has more awareness of Hindi, better weather, malls and affordable rental houses (where you don't have to buy a boat in rainy season).

Where Chennai scores is in its Local Trains, better roads (most of them)and Libraries (The Anna Library opening shortly is going to be the second largest in India).

Autowallahs in Chennai do NOT charge by the meter. So, its entirely on how you bargain. In Bangalore, autos run by the meter, but only within the city limits.

"Hey, the hospital called. They have fixed your funny bone and want to give it back." - :D Is this your own piece? Hilarious.

And I have probably come across your blog before, but I started reading it again after that nice last post of yours (most recent).

Anyway, it makes me swell with joy seeing someone diss Chennai like this! BTW, did you know this- Lucifer himself decided Chennai was going to be way too harsh on any soul no matter how malefic the person has been. That is why he created a nice soothing 'hell' full of fire, boiling lava and what not.

Also, not to sound rude, but I didn't understand this "world 2nd beach" that "is in chennai, not in Blr" as Mr. Sanjeev has very articulately pointed out.

Finally, I think the Chennaiites who stand by their so called metropolitan city, have just gotten too used to having their own versions of idlis, vadas and sambar. And if it is the exercise of their own volition to wallow in that 'Bessi' beach where you can sometimes spot sand in between all the filth, and then gasconade about Chennai having a beach and Bangalore not having one, who are we to argue?

Jay said...

Interesting article.....

been a while since i argued about this did a lot in school.... IIT madras, when did you pass out from there... i love that place.....and i wish i never passed out(i get why u say that)....4 years there fallen in love it and in the processes with madras(i refuse to call that place Chennai)

Forget the technical asspects.. i have lived in both places and now stuck in gurgoun and frankly wishing i can just come back to either of the cites...(no offense to ppl from gurgoun..but. got to agree u guys make the best tandoori chicken and dal makhni)

Madras its hot i have to give everyone that... therefore existing there becomes difficult.... but then again...i remember walking to besse beach 1 in the night... with the road side chai walla... having a cigarette and some chai.. spend hours in front of the ocean just wasting away time... the city is relaxed.. and has an attitude that mostly is i dont care.. as long its not in the open....

Bangalore the year i stayed there..has more energy . i loved spending all evening in pecos till they had to throw us out... the attitude in general is a bit more open... but it seems to be the city a bit lost trying to find its own identity,,,

both city has its merits and issues.... i guess and both cities are changing..

someone said something about migration....into Bangalore and Madras

well Madras could use a slight attitude shift...its happening with all those auto guys coming.. the IT jobs..(OMR does look quite fancy and it does have a potential to bee something pretty cool)

technical Madras being a metro it has a lot in terms of infrastructure going for it..(only relatively)

And Bangalore has a nice weather

I do think for the masses in general Madras would be a better city to live in... In terms of Job opportunity and infrastructure...

Bangalore is a bit more high end i suppose...

both city has its merits...

but in the end... those four years i spend with madras where the most memorable period of my life.. and maybe for a completely sentimental reason... it has to be madras

cheers

The blogger is too sided towards Bangalore. That's clearly evident.

North Indians hate Chennai, just because the old Hindi national language war.

But when I went to Rameshwaram, its the people from Bangalore and North throng and spoiled the place.

Autowallas are atuowallas everywhere in India (Believe me i have been a frequent traveler to all cities in India. If there is one place, its Caclicut in Kerala. I was surprised to see autowallas returning 50 paise and 1 rupee. Amazing!

Both KA or TN or AP, only person who eats are politicians, the common man remains the pitiable.

Chennai-IIT, Bangalore-IIM and IISc. Overall average study quality is rich in Chennai.

Chennai-Machinery and Automobiles. Bangalore - Software.

There are equals, I do not see your comparison fair.

Anonymous said...

Between, I heared a North Indian lady saying to me in Bangalore.

She was complaining of a school in Bangalore that they are teaching Kannada in the school for her kid.

She said (just repeating the same words here)
"We North Indians feel embarrassed when the schools are compelling us to learn Kannada, how can they do this, absolute stupidity".

My answers:

1. "Why the hell we should speak or learn Hindi, when we can also think the same way"

2. Get out of Bangalore and goto North India. You are here only because its more safer and comfort zone. Can we south people think of settling in North?

prabaharan said...

I dont understand everyone delhi asking me to learn hindi when i was there. And when they were in chennai they want whole chennai to learn hindi. Get life bro. Come outta ur mindset and see. Chennai and TN is bench mark for india. All the so called hindi speaking states are in poverty. Worse than africa.

As proud native speakers of a 2500+ year old language which is as old as Latin and older than Arabic and possesses the oldest extant secular and erotic literature in the world,
the Tamils have a right to be proud of their own language and speak it and your expectation that everyone
in my city should know English or Hindi is not very considerate.

I am yet to hear one Tamil who complains that he tried to speak Tamil in lets say New Delhi or Bangalore and nobody responded back. Its simple. Using Hindi to people who do not know it and expecting them to answer back is like trying to write C++ code using the windows SDK and expecting it to work in POSIX complaint systems.

You know what a developer who does that will be called ? Stupid.

And i am sorry that the poor guy
who operates the rickshaw or the
poor guy who runs a hawker shop does not know English as well as
you do.

And no offense to hindi or kannada but, I find no need to learn a language called hindi which will add no value to my daily life.

I respectfully disagree to your hypothesis that the greatness of a city depends on AC buses, amount of fancy western style bars, PDAs in public.. etc

First of all, there is actually a good amount of western-style bars, public displays of affection and a decent number of air conditioned buses.

But, who uses these buses ? Lower middle class/low income class people who work all day for less than Rs 15,000/month and struggle to make ends meet.. You need buses which have cheap fare to cater to this group of people who actually make up the significant amount of the populace who use public transport.

You can feel safe in Madras, People can walk in the streets at any time of the night and still will not be molested, raped or killed as it happens in Delhi or Bangalore.

And frankly, you do not seem to understand that Saravana stores exists to cater to those people who are of low income brackets and those who want to get a shirt which will cost Rs. 50 rather than some high end label which costs Rs. 5000. Since they are in huge numbers, The stores are huge and they actually make good profit and you know what ? That guy didnt go to IIM Bangalore, but his business idea is genius. I bet the uneducated, Tamil speaking, village guy who started saravana is way more brilliant than the 90,000 or so people who work for Infosys and he caters to the local populace unlike the "IT" companies of Bangalore which are dependent on the American Market.

For all you might say, Chennai has trained/produced some of the most famous Indians today. People who really brought fame to India. Madras University's alums include Two Nobel winners(Chandrashekar and Raman),Ramanujan, founding board member of google and Billionaire Ram Shriram and Vishwanathan Anand.

India's one and only Turing award(CS equivalent of Nobel) winner was a student of Anna University Chennai and not any of the IITs.

Indira Nooyi, the most powerful woman in the world and chairwoman of Pepsico, she didnt go to IIM Bangalore, she went to MCC.

And IIT Madras, heads of Yahoo research, Microsoft Research Banglaore and numerous other world class Computer scientists all are from Chennai and are Tamil speaking tamilians.

If you think that having a more drinking options makes your city superior than a 1500 year old temple in the middle of my city or the oldest anglican church or the resting place of St. Thomas, I am sorry, you are dissing a true part of Indian culture for a petty pleasure. Not everyone can afford Dom Perignons and Thierry Triolets all the time.

The worst thing about Tamil Nadu in general is its politicians and even they do not interfere with progress and development. But, atleast they are not communally motivated like your govt which bans beef consumption. Atleast we don't have the hindu Taliban or any kind of communal tension whatsoever.

Please think for a bit. I am sorry if i have indirectly hurt any one with my comment. I apologize cause its what my "Tamil" culture tells me to do.

English is ok, but why the F should you expect people to speak Hindi? Hindi is just one language spoken by less than 40% of the country's population.

I am a hardcore Bangalorean and I agree that Bangalore is much better than Chennai in many ways, but certainly NOT with your arrogant "Hindi statement".

I have spent half my life in the "North", and I speak, read and write Hindi very well, maybe better than you. But I have the sense to stop demanding it of others.

And to reiterate what someone said above: your backward Hindi states are keeping the entire country backward. The backwardness in the Bimaru cow belt of Hindi speaking states is mind boggling. Get out of your inflated sense of superiority and stop expecting the whole country to speak Hindi. If you people had concentrated on real development like the Tamilians and other South Indians, India would have been a very different place today.

And like I said, I am NOT a Tamilian, I am a Kannadiga who has lived and traveled throughout India, and who can speak 4 languages fluently including Hindi.

Another Chennai bashing NI.. Feel sad for you dude. You cannot bash a place that gave you a job. Without positives a city can't be a Metro, Automobile capital, electronic hub or a major IT hub. Let me tell you some facts,
1. don't pretend like you came jumped from swiss. I have been to Delhi, haryana, punjab etc,. They have been developed at the cost of rural areas around it. TN has macro economy. It's a heavily industrialised state. The slums in NI, Mumbai, Pune are just drainages and you will see one at very 3kms.
2. Why don't you go back to ur own place 4 job? If you don't like just get out.
3. Hindi?? Will learning that get me a job? Never. I don't want to end up in some stinky city and shot down by terrorists. First ask NI to read&write in hindi and your so called educated fella to speak understandable English.
4. Can't you afford a bike? Think this place has given you job, money, and a respect.
5. Food? You know the fact & be honest.

The weather - If I hear this from a guy from Pune or Bangalore I agree (Not an outsider to that place). Almost all parts of India has bad weather. And that dosn't stop cities from development. Even in backward areas in chennai ppl use A.Cs.

The autowallahs - Let me guess. You come to central and spoke to him with hindi, and expected him in reply back in that language. Autowallas knew that NIs lack guts and shooed u, right? You might not even tried English. Even you may bluff replying that you spoke in english. Worse NI english is as same as chinese. Pijja for Pizza and Espesal for Special. Yes, they do ask a lot due to a rapid increase in 2 wheelers. It's how you bargain in ENGLISH not HINDI.

Language issues - Learn Tamil or speak atleast good English or get out. Literacy is 87% dude. Already those 'cow belt' ppl has invaded and started making 'asbestos' slums. As a guy told above it doesn't get jobs for us. The only use is to answer the 1000s of beggers, coming from NI, with their 20+ member families, travel to all stations in south, and literally touching everyone's feet for money. Proof? There r lots of videos around the net. And get the proper definition of Metro. Metros are based on development, quality of living not languages. Coming from a drainage called delhi, you don't deserve to comment about Chennai.

Buses - Ignorance is bliss.CMBT is the largest bus terminal in SE Asia. And the routes are written in English and properly numbered. They have 4 kinds of buses for all routes. Literacy speaks again. You guys in cowbelt won't even take tickets right? Pls have a look at their 'fast' DTC buses. Just a couple.

well the answer is simple.. instead of beating around the bush, arguing for hours and fighting like dogs on this, just figure this out.. how many bangaloreans have settled in chennai and vice versa. or more so how many indians have settled in bangalore/chennai..

and as for the food about sarvanna u mentioned in chennai, sample this.. there is not MTR in chennai, no bisibelebath, no maddur vade, no haal bai, no halli mane, no vidyarthi bhavan masala dosa, no variety like thta u get on food street. I can go on and on and on...
